Mayor cancels the muni's meetings until March

City Hall, Hamilton Bermuda: first council to be elected by residents is in complete disarray

City of Hamilton Mayor Graeme Outerbridge has suspended all Corporation of Hamilton meetings until March.

The move  climaxes a prolonged period of infighting among the councillors and a series of confrontations with the central Government.

And it comes just months before the end of the so called “Team Hamilton”‘s first term in office.

An email sent to the Councillors on Friday refers to a “situation” that occurred in the Mayor’s Parlour that morning “which was a clear breach / violation of the code of ethics and conduct”.

The email, from Corporation Secretary Ed Benevides, continues:

“Based on this breach /violation the Mayor has instructed that there will be no Corporation meetings (council or committee) for the next 6 weeks. This will allow for Members to pause and reflect on conducting themselves in accordance with the code before meetings continue.”

It adds that members will be informed of a new schedule for meetings on March 9.

Politica understands that a handful of councillors met with the Mayor on Friday and discussed pending legal action against the Government.

The discussion did not go well and the Mayor made good on a threat to suspend all meetings later that day.

Details of the dispute are as yet unclear.

A notice posted on the Corporation’s website yesterday announced that “ALL Council and Committee meetings have been cancelled until further notice” but offered no reasons for the state of affairs.

Mayor Outerbridge could not be reached for comment last night.

City bosses have filed a number of legal challenges against Government.

Team Hamilton made history in Bermuda on May 10, 2012 when they were chosen to govern the City for a three year term in the first elections which gave residents of the municipalities the right to vote.

Within months, the council became mired in controversy and division.
